CLUB

Hello, guys. I’m the chairperson of KIMC – HWANIL, Sangyoung Choi. Fist, KIMC is abbreviated from Korea International Model Congress, simulating the same procedure as the real International congress does. Participants will represent nations, debate about any agenda, and make resolution with all delegates. Our club prepare Model United Nations of Model Congress, so we share each others’ opinions and debate like Model United Nations form with English.

Educational reform now

By Jeong Jae-hong

Since entering elementary school and up until high school, I have always asked myself: "Why should I study?" and "What am I learning at school?" These two questions have never gone away. Some people would answer, "It's a student's duty to study," while others would answer, "You have to study so you don't fall behind and become a loser." Neither answer is satisfactory for me. So my doubts about the efficacy of studying have only grown each year.

Nor can I understand why selfish students with good grades are lauded while generous students with middling grades are ignored. I know many selfish students who excel academically, and, conversely, I know many middling students who are generous towards their fellow students. Still, our society seems to be saying, "Grades trump character."

Many high-school students are subordinate to society's dictum. Since grades are all that matters to them, they become studying zombies to get into top schools. But getting into elite schools is limited to the very, very best, creating fierce competition among students. This is a heavy burden for students to bear. So much so that some students suffer nervous breakdowns and even commit suicide. That's why Korean students have the distinction of committing suicide more often than their peers in other OECD countries.

To impress universities with their academic ability, students commonly use smoke and mirrors. That is, they exaggerate their scholastic achievements when applying to universities. Teachers are complicit as well. For example, there is the case of a teacher at a private Gwangju high school, changing grades on a student's transcript that was sent to universities. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Bullying is also common at schools. I have grown up watching bullying for 12 years, and I am pretty sure the mentality exists at all schools, both public and private.

To end antisocial behavior at schools, I want to become an educational administrator. My goal is to create a "normal" educational system to replace the current counterproductive one. This may be unrealistic given Koreans' rigid mind-set about education, but something must be done to change our entrenched educational system. After all, education is one of society's pillars.

Everyone goes to school, but being well educated is another matter. My proposals for educational reform would change the school system significantly while providing true education to all students.

For change at my own school, I decided to run for school president so I could have face-to-face meetings with the principal and head teachers. I ran for president and was elected by an overwhelming majority. But there was no mechanism for effecting change. To get anything done I had to cut through a lot of red tape, which was exasperating.

Since I had only abstract ideas about educational reform, I needed concrete proposals, which is why I proposed to hold a conference of student delegates to discuss school matters. After the president of each class finds out his classmates' opinions concerning school matters, we would then hold the conference and discuss issues the students were concerned about. I am especially determined to address bullying and educational reform.

I have gotten permission to hold the conference from the principal and head teachers. And I am very proud to say that it will be the first student conference to be held at Hwanil High School.

I am also proposing a mentor-tutor program for students who can benefit from peer counseling and/or tutoring in subjects like mathematics, science or English composition. This program will be run solely by student volunteers with humanistic qualities and who excel academically. Since it is far better to give than to receive, the volunteers themselves will benefit from helping fellow students.

I hope the mentor-tutor program can help to put an end to the cutthroat competition that has turned our educational system into a zero-sum game. Empathy and sharing knowledge will lead to fellowship among students. This program is more than academic help; it will develop character, build bonds among students and produce better students. Everyone benefits.

I want to make school a place where everyone wants to be, rather than a place where everyone is stressed out all the time. This stress is a direct result of intense studying. I reckon participating in sports is the best way to relieve stress. But since our school has only a soccer tournament that includes all the students, I proposed that we have basketball and E-sports tournaments, too. The school's new gymnasium would be the venue for basketball and E-sports would take place in the computer laboratory.

I believe all my proposals would greatly enhance the environment at Hwanil High School and produce better students.
