Hallyu stars need to create own style

By Kang Hee-bum

Hallyu, or the Korea wave, is a neologism referring to the increase in popularity of Korean culture since the late 1990s. Hallyu began with the spread of Korean dramas that were televised across Southeast Asia and China.

This interest in Korean dramas led foreigners to focus on other parts of Korean culture, especially K-pop that has enchanted so many people. These days a lot of people love K-pop as well as Korean culture.

I do agree that the K-pop phenomenon is great in many ways. Before it started, many people did not even know where South Korea was located. But now, K-pop lovers come to Korea to experience Korean culture, spreading it all over the world and increasing the number of tourists exponentially. However, we should recognize that this K-pop phenomenon leaves a lot to be desired.

As many of us already know, K-pop culture exploded after Psy's "Gangnam Style" became a global sensation in 2012. His humorous and easy to follow dancing moves and up-tempo rhythms influenced the whole world.

Due to his big hit, Psy was even ranked as one of the most influential people in 2012. Because of his success, K-pop singers are aiming to succeed just like him.
Therefore, they seem to try their best to get recognition by revealing their bodies explicitly and focusing on their beauty. The bottom line is that performers no longer care about the real essence of music.

In other words, they are blinded by their desires for fame. Psy's new album, "Hangover" was released last year, and it was roundly criticized because of too many similarities with his other albums. This indicates that not only Psy but many Korean idols lack ingenuity, novelty and creativity.

Although I am not an expert in this field, I believe that to develop Korean culture, especially K-pop, we should not just mimic those who succeed. We should create our own style. By doing this, I am sure that we can achieve success and develop our country as well as Korean culture.
